Mission of the Hinckley Chair

THE MARJORIE PAY HINCKLEY ENDOWED CHAIR IN SOCIAL WORK AND THE SOCIAL SCIENCES honors Sister Hinckley's commitment to strengthening home and family. The Chair enriches the educational and professional lives of students and faculty in the College of Family Home and Social Sciences as they strive to alleviate problems faced by individuals and families worldwide.

THE PRIMARY FOCUS OF THE CHAIR IS:

To understand and strengthen the family in areas of marriage, parenting, family roles, and family well-being.
To understand and encourage the development of women through growth experiences in a variety of roles, including spirituality, education, community service, family life and career development.
To research and develop intervention strategies relating to the challenges of parenting, such as single parenting, parenting after divorce, step-parenting, parenting the troubled child, and parenting children with disabilities.
To research and develop intervention strategies relating to the challenges of children, such as social development, abuse recovery, dysfunctional families, immigrant child acculturation, and learning disabilities.

THE CHAIR PROVIDES THE FOLLOWING OPPORTUNITIES:

An Annual Marjorie Pay Hinckley Lecture delivered on the BYU campus by a prominent social sciences scholar.
Two- or three-day visiting scholar to provide workshops, seminars and individual mentoring opportunities for faculty and students.
Mentored-student learning and faculty research grants.
Scholarly research conferences.
Outreach efforts: community training, conferences and service.
