"Placing Belonging at the Center of Becoming BYU"

As recipient of the Hickman Belonging & Diversity Award in the College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences, David-James Gonzales, history professor, will offer a lecture on belonging at BYU. Gonzales will draw on his scholarly research and personal experiences with students and colleagues as he shares insights on BYU’s unique position among U.S. colleges and universities to become the destination for Christ-centered belonging in higher education.

About David-James Gonzales

David-James (DJ) Gonzales is an assistant professor of history at Brigham Young University. His research focuses on the relationship between migration, urbanization, and civil rights in Southern California. He has published in several academic journals and anthologies, including the Journal of American Ethnic History, American Studies, and 50 Events That Shaped Latino History. His current book project, Breaking Down the Walls of Segregation: Mexican Americans and Civil Rights in Orange County, California (under contract with Oxford University Press) illuminates Mexican Americans' central role in ending de jure segregation and advancing social justice in California.

In 2019, Gonzales was named a Young Scholar Fellow by the Institute for Latino Studies at the University of Notre Dame and a SITPA Fellow by Duke University and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. In 2021, he received the Career Enhancement Fellowship from the Institute for Citizens and Scholars (formerly Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship) and the Butler Young Scholar Award from the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies at BYU. Gonzales is also the producer and host of the scholarly book review podcast New Books in Latino Studies, part of the New Books Network.
